DIY Christmas photo ideas!

The festive season is the perfect time to capture family moments, and a DIY Christmas photoshoot can create memories that you'll cherish forever. Not only is it a fun way to spend time together, but it also allows you to create unique and personal photos. From festive family portraits for christmas cards to candid snapshots filled with joy, this guide has some amazing ideas to make your photoshoot a joyful success.

Choose Your Theme

Picking a theme is the first and crucial step in planning your photoshoot. Themes are a good starting point and another way to add fun and creativty. Some ideas could be 'outdoor winter wonderland', 'ugly christmas jumpers' or 'simple and timeless'. This year for my christmas sessions I chose a 'christmas baking' theme. My families will come and bake gingerbread together and then decorate the tree while I snap away capturing the memories.

A top tip for anyone with little people - giving them an activity (such as baking, a christmas craft, a wintry walk) will keep them busy and happy and you'll get those authentic moments much easier!

Location, Location, Location

Selecting the right location can significantly impact your photos. Consider using your home—especially a living room with a well-decorated tree or a cosy fireplace. Studies show that natural light can improve photo quality significantly. If you’re outdoors, local parks or even your back garden can provide beautiful backdrops.

Here in Kent in the UK, we don't often see snow or that picturesque winter weather but wrapping up and gettin g outside can still add some festive magic. There are lots of parks and places around Kent and the South - east you could use. It doesn't have to be any where crazy - Just somewhere with some wintry trees.

Outfits Matter

Your choice of outfits can enhance your photos’ overall feel. Choose colours that resonate with your theme, such as deep reds and greens during the Christmas season. Outfit coordination can make the photos more pleasing. For example, if you choose a cosy theme at home, consider everyone wearing festive pyjamas or Christmas jumpers.

Comfort is key; if your family isn’t comfortable in their clothes, it will show in their expressions. Aim for outfits that allow everyone to relax and enjoy the moment.

Lighting is Crucial

Lighting is vital in capturing beautiful photos. The best time to shoot indoors is when natural light pours in, usually during the day near windows; avoid harsh direct sunlight that creates deep shadows.

If you’re shooting in the evening, fairy lights can create a stunning atmosphere. For outdoor settings, you could plan your shoot during the "golden hour," which is about an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset—this is when the light is softest and most flattering.

Candid Moments Count

Candid moments often hold the most joy. Encourage genuine interactions between family members. Sometimes the best shots are of laughter during a funny story or a spontaneous hug.

These natural moments capture the season's joy better than any posed shot can. Don’t be afraid to snap lots of photos while letting everyone interact freely. Something I always look to catch during a session are those 'in between moments'. For example I might give a prompt like "look at who ever snores the loudest" (or something silly the kids will enjoy) and then I'm looking to capture the moments after that where everyone is giggling and interacting.

Editing for the Perfect Finish

Editing your photos can elevate them to the next level. Even our phones now days have editing tools built in and there are lots of fun and free apps you could use to add some extra festive joy to your photos.

Create and Share Your Memories

After editing, it's time to share your beautiful creations. You can create Christmas cards featuring your favorite images, sending them out to family and friends. According to a recent survey, 60% of people appreciate receiving personalised cards during the festive season; this simple act can strengthen connections.

You might also consider creating a festive photo book for a keepsake that tells your family's story. Showcasing these moments at family gatherings or donating cards to local charities can spread joy beyond your immediate family.

Celebrate the Joy of Family

A DIY Christmas photoshoot is an excellent way to celebrate the joy of the festive season while creating cherished memories. From choosing a theme, location, and outfits to capturing those natural, candid moments, every stage is an opportunity for fun and creativity.

No matter how your photos turn out—perfectly posed or delightfully candid—the most important thing is to enjoy the process with your family. So gather everyone, unleash your creativity, and enjoy the magic of the season through the lens of your camera. Before you know it, beautiful memories will be captured that you will treasure for years to come.

Happy shooting and Merry Christmas!
