How to prepare for your maternity photoshoot

Hi, I'm Maria. A newborn, family and maternity photographer in Kent. My first ever session was a maternity one and it's still one of my favourite shoot types to do. It can be a bit daunting to book in for a maternity session, we're led to believe that we're going to be vibrant and glowing during pregnancy and feel our most feminine selves. But sometimes, often even, this isn't the case. Pregnany can leave us feeling pretty slug like to say the least. But that's where I come in. I'll work with you from the start, to help prepare you for your session and get you feeling your best - starting with this blog post.

From wardrobe to hydration, here’s how to feel relaxed, confident, and glowing.

Book the Right Time

The first thing we can do to have you feeling your best, is to book you in at the right time in your pregnancy. This can look different for everyone but generally I aim for around 34-35 weeks. This way you're showing beautifully but not in the most uncomfortable stage yet.

We'll chat in advance, if you're expecting multiples or you started showing early, maybe we might bring that forward a little.

Plan Your Wardrobe

What you wear is important in how you feel. Normally the mums I work with come to me with a vision of their session in advance. They'll already know if they're aiming for the flowy dress look or a more casual vibe. If you're not sure, there's no reason to worry. We'll discuss your ideas for the session, your location thoughts and I can guide you in the best direction.

Here are some tips that could be helpful;

  • Go for flowy dresses: They catch the breeze beautifully and highlight your bump.

  • Solid, soft colours: Earthy tones are my favourite and photograph beautifully. They keep the focus on you.

  • Avoid busy patterns or logos: These can distract from the emotion of the image.

  • Undergarments matter: Nude, seamless options help avoid lines or unwanted peeks.

  • Ask about my client closet! I offer a small but well thought out collection of maternity gowns that you’re welcome to borrow—just let me know.

Bonus tip: If your partner or kids are joining, coordinate but don’t match. Stick to complementary tones and simple styles.

Hair, Makeup & Nails

This is a really personal one and everyone will have a different vision of what looks best on themselves. If you really want to go glam, you could always get your make up done in advance. But honestly, it's not really necessary and most people don't. My style goes hand in hand with a more natural look. Some mascara to darken your lashes and a bit of tint on your lips goes a long way.

If you do have time before your session though, I would recommend doing your nails. Even just giving them a clean up and file is helpful. I like to get nice close-up shots of your bump and hands are often in them!

Hydrate & Rest

I know life can be hectic, but giving your body a little love before the session makes a big difference.

  • Drink plenty of water the day before and day of.

  • Try to get a good night’s sleep.

  • Eat something light before your shoot so you’re energised but not bloated.

Arrive Early & Breathe

Rushing = stress. Try to arrive a few minutes early so you can relax and settle in. I’ll guide you through everything—no modelling experience needed, promise!

We’ll take breaks as needed, and I’ll pose you in ways that feel natural and flattering. This time is about you, your baby, and the joy that’s growing inside of you. Let’s soak it all in.

Final Thoughts

You’re creating life. That alone is incredible. Your maternity session is a way to celebrate your strength, your softness, and this fleeting moment before everything changes (in the most beautiful way).

Got questions? I’m here for you. Let's make some magic ✨
